Skin Care: A Healthy Skin Routine from Cleansing to Cream

July 4, 2026  ·  6 min. read

Skin care becomes simple when you know your skin type, the condition of your skin barrier, and the main steps of your routine. In this article, we will explain how to gently cleanse your face, when to choose a serum, cream, and SPF, how often to exfoliate your skin, and how to change products with the seasons. You will find clear answers for beginners and for those who want order on their bathroom shelf. Let’s start with the basics.

What is good skin care and why is it important?

Good skin care is not ten bottles on a shelf. It is a few steps you do consistently. A clean face morning and evening, a moisturizing cream, and SPF during the day — this is exactly the kind of daily skin care that truly works.

Why is it important? The skin is our largest organ and is exposed every day to pollution, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations. Without proper care, the barrier weakens, and dryness, redness, or breakouts can appear. A consistent routine helps the skin recover and remain strong for many years.

What Are the Main Steps in a Skincare Routine?

A facial skincare routine is based on three pillars: cleansing, an active product, and moisturizing. SPF in the morning and occasional exfoliation are added to these. In most cases, you do not need more. Consistency is more important than quantity.

Facial Cleansing

Facial cleansing is the foundation. In the evening, we remove makeup, SPF, and impurities that have accumulated throughout the day - without this step, even the best serum will not work. In the morning, a gentle cleanse is enough. Choose a cleanser according to your skin type: emulsion and milk textures are suitable for dry and sensitive skin, while gel-based formulas are suitable for oily and combination skin. The water temperature should be lukewarm, not hot.

Serum and Active Ingredients

A serum is a concentrated step that addresses a specific skin need. Hyaluronic acid moisturizes, niacinamide reduces redness and regulates oily shine, vitamin C brightens, and retinol strengthens the skin’s structure. For beginners, we recommend choosing one serum and using it for at least a month. Only then will you see its true effect.

Cream and SPF

A moisturizing cream helps lock in what the previous steps have provided to the skin. This is an important part of skin barrier care, helping protect against transepidermal water loss. In summer, textures are lighter; in winter - richer. In the morning, the routine must always end with SPF - even in winter, even when it is cloudy. It is the only product that truly slows down skin aging.

Exfoliation

Exfoliating the skin 1-2 times per week is sufficient. Chemical exfoliation with AHA or BHA acids is gentler than mechanical exfoliation with brushes. If the skin is sensitive or damaged - skip this step for a few weeks until the barrier recovers. In a separate article, you will find daily skincare tips.

Beautician's advice

Why do five serums work worse than two? In our cosmetologist’s office, we see clients almost every day who use a stack of active products at the same time and wonder why their skin becomes red, flaky, or breaks out. We recommend a simple rule: one new product every two weeks. This way, you will see what works and what causes irritation. For beginners, a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, SPF, and one serum as needed are enough. Later, you can add retinol or acids—but not everything at once. Fewer products, more consistency. This kind of routine remains convenient both while traveling and on busy days.

How to Arrange Your Morning and Evening Routine?

In the morning, the main goal is protection. In the evening - cleansing and restoration. Therefore, the order of steps differs slightly, although the products may be repeated.

In the morning: a gentle cleanser or just water, toner (optional), serum with antioxidants (e.g., vitamin C), moisturizer, SPF 30 or higher. Everything takes 3-5 minutes.

In the evening: if you used SPF or makeup - double cleansing (hydrophilic oil, then cleanser). If not - one step is enough. Then toner, serum (e.g., niacinamide, peptides, or retinol), moisturizer. Around the eyes - a product specifically designed for this area.

Seasons change needs. In winter, skin tends to become drier - choose richer textures and add a restorative serum. In summer, lighter gel creams and stronger SPF are sufficient. If you notice redness or a feeling of tightness - return to a minimal routine and allow the barrier to recover. The full range - facial care products - can be found in a separate section.

How often should you wash your face?
It is enough to wash your face twice a day - in the morning and in the evening. Washing more often can dry out the skin and weaken its barrier. If your skin is sensitive or very dry in the morning, it is sufficient to rinse your face with lukewarm water and use a cleanser only in the evening. After exercise or sweating, it is also worth rinsing your face to help prevent pores from becoming clogged.
Where should beginners start with skincare?
For beginners, four products are enough: a gentle cleanser, a moisturising cream, SPF for daytime, and one serum based on your skin’s main need. Use them consistently for at least a month to see how your skin reacts. Only then gradually add new products—one at a time, not all at once. This approach helps prevent irritation and allows you to understand what truly suits your skin.
Should you use SPF in winter and indoors?
Yes. UVA rays penetrate clouds and windows all year round, so SPF is essential not only in summer by the sea. In winter, SPF 30 is sufficient; in summer or in the mountains, choose SPF 50. If you work indoors all day away from a window, the exposure is lower, but making daily SPF use a habit is the best investment in youthful-looking skin.
How can you tell if the skin barrier is damaged?
Signs of a damaged barrier include a feeling of tightness, redness, flaking, tingling when using your usual products, and sudden sensitivity. The most common cause is too many active ingredients or exfoliating too often. The solution is simple: temporarily stop using acids, retinol, and exfoliants, and return to a gentle cleanser and a rich moisturizer. The barrier usually recovers within 2–4 weeks.
Can I use multiple serums at the same time?
It is possible, but caution is needed. Do not use retinol with AHA/BHA acids or vitamin C on the same evening - the skin may become irritated. A safe combination: vitamin C in the morning, retinol or acids in the evening. Hyaluronic acid and niacinamide are compatible with almost everything. If you are unsure, use one serum in the morning and another in the evening - this will help you avoid ingredient incompatibility.
