Is SPF necessary in winter? Yes - here's why?

April 7, 2026  ·  6 min. read

Yes, SPF is essential in winter. UVA rays penetrate clouds and glass all year round—they promote pigmentation, wrinkles, and premature skin aging even during the cold season. In winter, this is compounded by snow reflection and a weakened skin barrier due to heating and cold. We will explain why sunscreen in winter is part of daily skincare, how UV rays affect the skin in winter, and which products to choose.

Why Is SPF Necessary in Winter Too?

Many people use SPF only in summer because cold weather creates a deceptive sense of safety; it seems that if there is no heat, there is no danger. But UV rays are active in winter too. UVA rays, responsible for premature aging and pigmentation spots, remain almost unchanged with the changing seasons and make up about 95% of all UV rays that reach our skin.

In winter, additional factors come into play: snow reflects up to 80% of UV rays, so sun exposure can be even greater than in the shade during summer. Heating devices also dry out the skin and weaken its barrier, meaning even a short walk can cause redness or sensitivity. That is why dermatologists recommend sun protection every day, all year round.

How Do UVA and UVB Differ?

UVB rays - the main cause of sunburn - weaken in Lithuania during winter, but do not disappear completely, especially on clear days. UVA rays remain constant throughout the year: they penetrate through cloud cover, office and car glass, and reach the deeper layers of the skin, where they break down the skin’s structure.

In the mountains, the situation is more serious: for every 1,000 meters of altitude, UV intensity increases by 10-12%. Snow reflects a large portion of the rays, so while skiing, the skin receives a double dose: direct and reflected. Even in the city, short minutes by a window or in a car add up to a significant UV dose over the week. Our cosmetologists see this - clients who do not use SPF in winter are more likely to complain of pigmentation spots in spring.

Beautician's advice

Do you use retinol or AHA acids? Then SPF is essential in the morning, as these ingredients make the skin more sensitive to the sun. I recommend applying at least SPF 30 every morning, even if you plan to stay indoors near windows.

Do You Need a Different SPF in Winter?

Not necessarily—the level of protection is the same, but the texture and additional properties differ. Choose broad-spectrum products that protect against UVA and UVB. SPF 30 for the city, SPF 50 for the mountains.

In winter, prioritize creamy, moisturizing filters, as they help maintain the skin’s moisture, which is reduced by heating and wind. For dry skin, look for formulas with hyaluronic acid or ceramides. For oily skin, choose emulsion or gel-type sunscreens.

How to apply? SPF goes on last, after facial serum and moisturizer, before makeup. Amount: half a teaspoon for the face. Wearing makeup and can’t reapply? SPF powder or spray is an excellent choice.

One more tip: if you work near a window or drive a lot—car side windows let UVA through. An additional layer of SPF will definitely come in handy.

Dažniausiai užduodami klausimai
Do you really need SPF in winter in Lithuania?
Yes. UVA rays are present all year round, even on cloudy days, and up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds. In winter, snow additionally reflects radiation, so the skin receives a significant dose even during short walks.
What SPF is best for winter?
For daily use in the city, SPF 30 with broad-spectrum protection is sufficient. In the mountains or near snow, choose SPF 50. In winter, it is important that the cream also provides hydration, so look for formulas with hyaluronic acid or ceramides.
Can the same SPF be used in summer and winter?
Yes, if the product is broad-spectrum (UVA + UVB). The difference is usually not in the SPF number, but in the texture: lighter formulas are suitable for summer, while more moisturizing formulas are better for winter. The principle of SPF protection does not change depending on the season.
Is SPF necessary after using retinol?
Absolutely. Retinol, AHA, and BHA acids increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV rays. Without protection, pigmentation or redness may occur. Dermatologists recommend using at least SPF 30 every morning if retinol is used in the evening.
How often should you reapply SPF in winter?
If you work in an office and are not in direct sunlight, one application in the morning is sufficient. If you are outdoors for more than 2 hours (skiing, walking), reapply every 2 hours, just like in summer.
