Facial Care Routine: Morning and Evening Step Sequence

July 4, 2026  ·  6 min. read

A facial care routine becomes simple when you know what to do in the morning, what to leave for the evening, and how to layer products. In this guide, you will find a clear sequence from cleansing to SPF, tips for dry, oily, and sensitive skin, and the most common mistakes. The goal is simple: a consistent, gentle, and easy-to-repeat facial routine that leaves no guesswork at the bathroom shelf.

What Exactly Is a Facial Care Routine?

A facial care routine is a sequence of daily steps that supports the skin barrier, hydration, and cleanliness. Not ten bottles. Three or four steps in the morning, four or five in the evening—that is completely enough for most skin types.

Our cosmetologists see the same thing every day—clients buy a lot but use products chaotically. Consistency is more important than the number of products. Do you really need three serums at once? Almost never. When your facial routine is clear, the skin responds quickly—redness is reduced, the feeling of tightness disappears, and makeup applies more smoothly.

What does the correct morning and evening routine look like?

The main rule is simple: from the lightest to the thickest texture. A water-based serum goes before a cream, not the other way around. SPF is always last in the morning. In the evening, the active product comes second to last, and the routine is finished with a moisturizer.

Morning routine

In the morning, the skin has just woken up and has traces of night cream and sweat on it. Gentle cleansing with water and a gel or foam is enough. Next comes a toner to restore pH balance, an antioxidant serum (usually with vitamin C), a moisturizing cream, and SPF 30-50. Five steps that take seven minutes.

Evening routine

The evening requires more attention because SPF, makeup, and urban pollution need to be removed. This is where double cleansing works: the first step is an oil-based or milky cleanser that dissolves oil-based impurities; the second is a water-based cleanser that removes residue. You can find more in the guide facial cleansing steps.

After cleansing comes toner, an active serum (retinol, niacinamide, peptides, or acids as needed), eye cream, and a night moisturizer. Do not use retinol and acids on the same evening - plan them on different days.

Why does the routine depend on skin type?

Dry skin needs more lipids - creamy cleansers, richer night creams with ceramides. Oily skin needs gel textures, niacinamide, salicylic acid twice a week. Sensitive skin needs minimalism: cleanser, moisturizer, SPF. No active ingredients for the first two weeks. If you are not sure which group you belong to, check the guide skin types and only then choose products.

Combination skin is the most common case in Lithuania. A gel may suit the T-zone, while a creamy emulsion may suit the cheeks. The same person, two textures. This is not excess, it is logic.

Beautician's advice

Why do five serums in a row work worse than two? Our cosmetologists see clients almost every day who layer active ingredients without a break - vitamin C, retinol, AHA acid, and niacinamide all on the same evening. The skin does not have time to rest. We recommend one active product per routine, and distributing the others across the days of the week. Monday - vitamin C in the morning, Tuesday - retinol in the evening, Wednesday - acids, Thursday - a break and only hydration. This rhythm delivers a visible change in four weeks.

How to Adapt the Routine to Your Skin Every Day?

First week - observe. Write down what you use in the morning and evening. Second week - remove anything that overlaps. Three moisturizing serums with hyaluronic acid are not three times more effective than one.

Double cleansing in the evening - not a luxury, but a necessity if you use SPF or makeup. For the first step, choose an oil-based or milky product; for the second - a gentle gel or foam. In the morning, one cleanse is enough. Hot water - no. Lukewarm - yes.

Use toner immediately after cleansing, while your face is still damp - this helps active ingredients absorb better. Press the serum between your palms before applying. This allows the molecules to move and helps distribute the product more gently on the skin. Apply cream with gentle pressing motions, not rubbing. SPF - generously, two fingers are enough for the face and neck.

Want to start with the basics? Browse the facial cleansers category and choose what suits your skin type. A clean start is half the success. Without proper cleansing, even the most expensive serum will not deliver results.

Dažniausiai užduodami klausimai
How many steps should a facial care routine have?
In the morning, four or five steps are enough: cleansing, toner, serum, moisturizer, and SPF. In the evening, four to six, depending on whether you use double cleansing and active products. More products do not mean better skin. Consistency and the right choices are more important than quantity. For beginners, we recommend a minimal three-step routine for the first two weeks, then gradually adding active ingredients.
Can retinol and acids be used on the same evening?
We do not recommend it. Both ingredients are strong, and together they can overload the skin barrier and cause redness, flaking, or burning. Use them on different days: retinol on Monday, acid on Wednesday, retinol again on Friday. Between active days, use moisturizers without active ingredients. This system allows the skin to recover and receive the benefits of both ingredients without excessive irritation. For sensitive skin, one active product per week is enough.
Is SPF necessary in winter and on a cloudy day?
Yes. UVA rays penetrate through clouds and windows all year round. They are the ones that cause premature aging and pigmentation. In winter in Lithuania, an SPF 30 day cream is suitable for most cases, while in summer, SPF 50 is recommended. If you work in an office by a window, the same rule applies. SPF is the final step in your morning routine; apply generously and reapply if you spend more than two hours outdoors.
When will the effects of a facial care routine be visible?
A change in hydration and softness – within the first two weeks. Smoother texture and reduced pores – within four to six weeks. Reduction in pigmentation and fine lines – from three months onward. The skin renews itself in about 28 days, so any real changes require at least one full cycle. Do not change products every week – give your routine time to show what it can do.
What should you do if a new routine has irritated your skin?
Stop all active products immediately. Keep only a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer with ceramides or panthenol, and SPF. This minimal routine should last at least a week, until the skin calms down. Then reintroduce active products one at a time — one new product every three or four days. This will help you understand which specific product caused irritation. If the redness does not go away for more than two weeks, consult a dermatologist.
